Introduction
During the 2023 NFL season, certain players fell short in terms of fantasy football and overall performance. These disappointments stemmed from factors like injury, unfavorable circumstances, or players simply not meeting expectations. However, with 2024 on the horizon, it’s essential to look ahead. While it’s important to consider previous “busts” when drafting for the upcoming season, it’s also important to acknowledge that circumstances can change. Here are the top six breakout and bounce-back players for the 2024 season, along with explanations for why they are poised for a turnaround.
The Candidates
Bryce Young (QB – CAR)
The 2023 first overall pick had a disappointing rookie season, posting only 11 touchdowns and 2,877 yards, along with 10 interceptions across 16 games. Despite his underwhelming performance, there is strong potential for a comeback. The Panthers have hired Bucs offensive coordinator, Dave Canales, as the new head coach, and I believe he can guide the young prospect to reach his full potential. Canales just coached Baker Mayfield to the best season of his career, and I have high expectations for his impact on this young, soon to be star.
Tony Pollard (RB – DAL)
Tony Pollard was expected to have a great season last year, especially after his excellent performances at the end of the 2022-23 season. When Zeke was released from the Cowboys, Pollard finally got the starting role. However, it was clear that Pollard’s strengths are in specific types of plays, like runs to the edges of the field and the passing game. He wasn’t used to his full potential for most of the 2023 season. The Cowboys ran him up the middle far too often, and he just isn’t made for that. Once the Cowboys started using more plays that suit Pollard, his fantasy value improved. It’s likely that the Cowboys will keep using Pollard this way after seeing his true value. Furthermore, since Pollard is becoming a free agent this year, he might have the chance to join teams like the Eagles or the Ravens, which could be even better for his career. These teams could give Pollard the right opportunity to show his true potential that many expected from him last season.
Anthony Richardson (QB – IND)
Anthony Richardson had managed a pretty solid set of performances in his first four games for the Colts last year which made him a valuable asset for fantasy managers. With three touchdowns, just one interception, and impressive agility, he emerged as a great dual-threat QB. Unfortunately, his season was cut short in week 5. Although data is limited, I believe he is poised for a strong second year, provided he remains injury-free.
De’Von Achane (RB – MIA)
De’Von Achane made waves last season, boasting an impressive average of 7.9 yards per carry. The downside is that he played in just 11 games and with a total of 119 offensive snaps. Injury concerns and the Dolphins’ cautious approach limited his playing time, especially with Mostert ahead of him, who also played extremely well. However, with Mostert reaching 32 years of age, the Dolphins may look to reduce his workload and elevate Achane to the lead role. I believe that Achane will receive more first-team snaps during off-season practices and could potentially secure the starting position by the midpoint of the upcoming season. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if Achane gets the start in week one.
Tyjae Spears (RB – TEN)
Tyjae Spears was a valuable stash for fantasy teams last year even though he didn’t replace D. Henry as much as expected. Now that Henry is no longer with the Titans, Spears has a great chance to become the main back. He may even follow a similar path to Henry, becoming a workhorse back. However, even if he doesn’t, his skill in the passing game adds another strong point to his potential. I really think Spears is in a good position this year to make the most of his talent.
Christian Watson (WR – GB)
Christian Watson has dealt with numerous injuries throughout his NFL career. When he is healthy, he consistently delivers strong performances and could significantly contribute to the Packers who are still seeking their top wide receiver. Watson is known for making big plays, boasting an impressive career average of 15 yards per reception and scoring 12 touchdowns in just 23 games. With a dynamic quarterback targeting him, he has the potential for a remarkable season, provided he remains injury-free.
Final Thoughts
I believe these six players hold immense potential for a breakout and/or bounceback in the 2024 season. Their setups are great, and their talent is undeniable, leaving ample room for growth from last year. Without a doubt, I will prioritize drafting these players in my re-draft leagues this year. I anticipate that most of them can be acquired in the later rounds, except for Achane and possibly Spears, which could yield tremendous value.
